Stand Up support

Help with Stand Up, listed on the Mac App Store as "Stand Up - Take regular breaks". Last updated October 2026. This page describes version 4.0.

What does Stand Up do?

  • Tracking: it splits your day into sitting, standing and breaks, on its own, with no timer to start. It counts a break once there has been no keyboard or mouse input for a time you choose (1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3, 5 or 10 minutes; 2.5 minutes by default), or straight away when your Mac is locked. You tell it whether you are sitting or standing with a button; it does not detect this itself.
  • Break reminders: a notification to take a break every 15, 20, 25, 30, 45, 60, 75, 90 or 120 minutes (45 by default). The countdown starts again after each break. A break you have not taken is asked about again at the same interval.
  • Standing reminders: if you have a sit/stand desk, a notification to stand after sitting for 15, 20, 25, 30, 45, 60, 75, 90 or 120 minutes (60 by default).
  • Break length: an optional reminder that your break is over, after 2, 5, 10, 15, 20 or 30 minutes (5 by default). Off by default.
  • Snooze: break and standing reminders can be put off by 15, 30 or 60 minutes from the notification; the break-over reminder can be stretched by 5 or 10 minutes.
  • Staying quiet: it holds reminders back while any microphone is in use (on by default; no microphone permission needed and nothing is recorded), during calendar events (off by default; needs calendar access), and while the Mac is locked. A held reminder is tried again every 2 minutes, so it arrives after the call or meeting. All-day events, events marked free, cancelled events and events you declined do not count.
  • Meetings: with calendar events turned on, if a break would fall inside a meeting of 25 minutes or more that starts within 10 minutes, it suggests taking the break before the meeting.
  • Backing off: after three break reminders in a row with no break taken, it stops break reminders for an hour.
  • Check-ins: a notification after every 3 hours of tracked time saying how the day looks, sent only when you need more breaks or more standing. A summary of last week on the first day of the week, comparing your standing share with the week before. Both can be turned off.
  • Menu bar: an icon showing whether you are sitting, standing or on a break, and optionally the countdown to your next break. Clicking it shows today's time and percentages, the countdown, a seven-day chart, a tip for the day, the "I'm standing now" / "I'm sitting now" button, and the apps you spent most time in today (top 8).
  • History: the last 90 days are kept. Export them as a CSV file, reset today's totals, or erase all history.
  • No sit/stand desk: turn off "I have a sit/stand desk" and standing time and its reminders disappear.
  • Also: a Today widget in small and medium sizes; Shortcuts actions and Siri phrases to start a break, ask how long until the next break, ask about today, ask how long you have stood, and set your posture; launch at login; reminder sound on or off; a welcome screen you can reopen from Settings; English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Brazilian Portuguese and Dutch.

If something is not on this list, Stand Up does not do it today.

What does Stand Up not do?

  • It does not detect whether you are sitting or standing, and it does not connect to or control a standing desk. You tell it with the button or with Shortcuts.
  • It does not use the camera, record the microphone, or read what you type.
  • You cannot set your own interval; only the values listed above are offered.
  • There is no pause button and no working-hours schedule. You can snooze from a notification or turn reminders off in Settings. The day starts at midnight.
  • It does not lock your screen or force a break.
  • There is no iPhone, iPad or Windows version, and nothing syncs between Macs.
  • It does not track time while the Mac is asleep or Stand Up is closed.
  • It does not write to Apple Health.
  • History older than 90 days is not kept. The app list shows today only and is not in the CSV export.
  • The Siri phrases are in English only.

What does Stand Up cost?

$1.99, paid once when you download it. There are no in-app purchases and no subscription.

This is the US price as of October 2026. The App Store shows the price in your currency.

How do I restore my purchase?

Download Stand Up again from the Mac App Store with the same Apple Account. You are not charged twice for an app you have bought.

How do I get a refund?

Refunds for App Store purchases are handled by Apple. Go to reportaproblem.apple.com, sign in, and choose the purchase.

Which Macs does it work on?

Version 4.0 needs macOS 14 or later.

I used an older version. Will I lose my settings?

No. Coming from version 2.1, your reminder intervals, which reminders were on, your standing desk setting and today's totals are carried across. Coming from version 3, your history is kept.

Where is the app? There is no Dock icon.

Stand Up lives only in the menu bar. Click its icon to see your day. Settings and Quit are at the bottom of that window.

Why am I not getting reminders?

  • Notifications may be turned off for Stand Up. The menu bar window then says "Notifications are turned off", with a link to System Settings.
  • Stand Up may be holding reminders back because you are on a call, in a calendar event, the Mac is locked, or you ignored three break reminders in a row, after which it waits an hour. The menu bar window says which.
  • The reminder may be turned off in Settings, or standing reminders are hidden because "I have a sit/stand desk" is off.
  • Stand Up must be running. Turn on "Launch at login" in Settings so it starts with your Mac.

How does it know I am on a call or in a meeting?

For calls, it checks whether any microphone is in use. This needs no permission and records nothing. For meetings, turn on "Stay quiet during calendar events" in Settings and allow calendar access. Your events are read on your Mac and never leave it.

How do I start a break by hand?

Use the "Start a Break" shortcut, or say "Start my break in Stand Up" to Siri. The break lasts for your break length, or ends when you are back at the keyboard.

Where is my data?

Everything stays on your Mac. There is no account, no iCloud sync and no server of ours, and nothing is sent anywhere. Calendar events, if you turn that on, are read on your Mac only.

How do I export my history?

Open Settings, then History, then Export as CSV…. The file has one row per day with sitting, standing, break and total seconds, and the standing share of desk time.

How do I delete my data?

Open Settings, then History. Reset today's totals sets today back to zero and keeps earlier days. Erase all history deletes every tracked day, today included; it cannot be undone. Your settings are kept.
